How is centrifugal force used to clean engine oil?

Having the cleanest oil possible run through an engine is crucial. Indeed, small particles that find their way in oil can damage the engine with their abrasive action. Filters can be used to stop a lot of particles but some of them are so small that they pass through any bypass filters that you can install on your engine. You need an oil cleaning centrifuge to keep them out of your oil. In this post, I’ll explain how centrifugal force is used to clean the tiniest particles out of oil.

Engine oil and centrifugal force

What is centrifugal force?

Centrifugal force is a case of fictitious force that appears in physics in the study of an object’s movement in a non-inertial reference frame. The effects of the centrifugal force that we feel are caused by the rotation movement of these reference frames and it translates by a tendency to be driven away from the rotation center. A great example of this force is the sensation of being pushed away in a car that takes a turn. Another example of the use of centrifugal force in our daily life is a dryer. The spinning that occurs in a drying cycle separates water from clothes with the help of centrifugal force.

How can we clean oil with centrifugal force?

Like we mentioned earlier, the smallest particles are not stopped by typical bypass filters and if nothing is done to filter them out of your oil, it can lead to premature wear of your engine over time. This is where an oil cleaning centrifuge comes into play. Essentially, when oil enters into the centrifuge bowl, it is spun rapidly (7 500 RPM) and this spinning eventually leads it to a very high speed. When this high speed is reached, the resultant centrifugal force pushes the small debris onto the bowl wall and clean oil exits the bowl by the turbine section after passing through a screen. Our oil cleaning centrifuges are usually installed on big engines such as marine engines and diesel generators.

The perks of using an oil cleaning centrifuge

Using an oil cleaning centrifuge for filtering your engine oil has many perks. Here are a few of them.

  • It extends oil life
  • It improves oil cleanliness
  • It reduces maintenance costs
  • It improves oil consumption efficiency
  • It helps the engine to last longer
  • It is an environment friendly solution

That’s a wrap on this post. We hope that you enjoyed reading it and learned a thing or two along the way!
