Solenoids, D C Contactors and Control Modules : Trombetta
A solenoid (from the French solénoïde, derived in turn from the Greek solen "pipe, channel" + combining form of Greek eidos "form, shape") is a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. The term was invented by French physicist André-Marie Ampère to designate a helical coil.
Industrial Work Solenoid: Construction and Basic Operation
A typical industrial work solenoid consists of the following main elements: a cylindrical coil, a steel or iron frame or shell, steel or iron plunger and optionally, a stationary magnetic pole/travel stop. A magnetic field is generated within the industrial work solenoid by passing electrical current through the coil. The frame or shell surrounds the coil, providing a flux path. In effect, it focuses the magnetic field produced by the coil. The plunger, being made of highly magnetic material, reacts to the magnetic field by attempting to move to the center of the coil. The plunger will travel to the centered position unless stopped by a load which exceeds the industrial work solenoid's force capability or the plunger contacts the stationary pole/travel stop.
Trombetta offers a wide range of Solenoids classified under different families.
A family is a group of products where each series is related by a specific technological design concept. Typically, one series of a Family will differ from another by the diameter of the housing and other performance characteristics. Some examples of Trombetta solenoid family are: Bear, Defender, Metal or Plastic Housing, Reversing Polarity and others.
DC Contactors: Construction and Basic Operation
DC Contactors comprise a high current switch and a solenoid in a single enclosure. The switch provides the desired function, to turn current flow on and off. The solenoid serves as the actuator for the switch, thereby allowing the switch to be controlled remotely via a light duty (low current) control device and light gage wiring
Trombetta DC Contactors provide a robust and economical means to switch high currents in low voltage DC circuits. These DC contactors are suited for applications involving voltages up to 48VDC. Current capacity varies by family with inrush capacity reaching 800 amps and continuous carry capacity reaching 225 amps for the larger units. The DC contactors allow these high currents to be turned on and off by switching current to the DC contactor's coil.
Voltage Control Over-Energizer (VCOE) : Construction and Basic Operation
These controls allow single winding solenoids to create the same high force of a large industrial work solenoid, thereby reducing space requirements and cost. They create high-energy pull performance with cool continuous holding control. Applications include valve actuators, switchgear, industrial brakes, engines and automation machines.
All Trombetta electronic controls are designed with the same ultimate benefit of allowing the use of smaller industrial work solenoids than would otherwise be needed to generate the force necessary to perform a particular job. Smaller industrial work solenoids provide the end product designer with more mechanical design flexibility. The use of the controller maximizes the cost effectiveness of the industrial work solenoid while providing the often overlooked benefit of eliminating the need for more costly and fragile dual winding coils. A single coil under PWM control utilizes 100 percent of the winding at all times resulting in higher efficiency and cooler operation.
You shall find them used popularly for :
- throttle control and fuel shut-off diesel engines
- switching current
- as control modules for maximizing solenoid performance
on Cummins, Deutz, CAT, John Deere, Detroit Diesels and some popular equipment brands as Genie / Terex, Skyjack, John Deere and many others.
